Monetary Incentives for Environmental Improvements

With the decline in the nation’s economy, money has become an increasingly important factor when addressing political and environmental issues. Along with economic decline, the U.S. is experiencing an increase in environmental problems brought on by the increasing size of the population in the country. At this rate of environmental degradation, the impacts of the growing population will eventually be too great for the environment to sustain. Therefore, it becomes increasingly obvious that our nation needs to make more of an effort to become environmentally efficient. There are numerous approaches, methods, and ideas for improving the environment, but many are never utilized or implemented. This lack of effort is likely greatly due to a lack of incentive as well as a lack of money. Businesses as well as individuals are not likely to make an extra effort with daily tasks simply for the sake of environmental quality. These efforts are even less likely to be made when they tend to be more expensive endeavors for a business or individual. It is evident that some incentive should be provided for those who make efforts toward environmental improvement. Given the current economic conditions, the obvious answer would be to provide monetary incentives for those who make the extra effort towards improvement. Monetary incentives for environmental improvements are essential for current and future environmental planning because they can be directed toward large corporations, government policies, and even individuals in society.

Monetary incentives have become an increasingly popular idea when dealing with attempts at becoming more sustainable. Monetary incentives are especially appealing to large corporations in more ways than one. Obviously, big businesses and individuals alike are interested by the new energy efficiency tax credits and other similar proposed incentives. Another way in which large corporations are affected by these environmental monetary incentives is through marketing. Even if corporations themselves are not receiving tax breaks, they are selling products to shoppers who are receiving increasing amounts of tax incentives for purchasing more efficient products. In this way, monetary incentive has increased consumer demand for environmentally friendly products which has forced companies to provide more efficient products. For example, the new tax credit has provoked companies such as Sears to provide EnergyStar appliances to consumers. In return, consumers can get rebates for purchasing these environmentally sustainable products. There are a wide range of efficient appliances offered in all major stores. A good example would be the new LED bulbs made by General Electric which replace fluorescent bulbs with much less energy use. Another good example of a corporation utilizing these new environmental incentives is Wal-Mart and the new green policy that has recently been adopted. This approach seems to be more of a marketing based approach because it promotes Wal-Mart as being sustainable. This in turn will also draw interest of consumers seeking to save money by being more efficient. Monetary incentives tend to work directly and indirectly to influence large businesses and corporations to provide more environmentally acceptable products. This trend is also seen in governmental affairs.

The government plays a major role in the implementation of monetary incentives in a number of ways. One obvious way the government contributes to environmental efficiency is by considering and introducing potential tax deductions to citizens for being more efficient. The new tax credit encourages efficiency by offering incentives such as home energy efficiency improvement tax credits, residential renewable energy tax credits, and automobile tax credits. Also, a tax credit is generally more valuable than an equivalent tax deduction because a tax credit reduces tax dollar for dollar, while a deduction only removes a percentage of what is owed. The government is not only working to promote efficiency to citizens, but to implement similar practices and develop new technology. A good example of new technology being utilized by a government program is the introduction of the first hybrid school buses in Ventura, California. This new bus is one of the first commercially available, plug-in hybrids. It is expected to achieve a fuel economy increase of up to 65% with pollutants reduced up to 40%. The government is currently using new technology to improve environmental quality while setting an example and providing monetary incentives to citizens to follow the lead.

Individuals in society are provided with numerous incentives for becoming more energy efficient. The new energy tax credit provides tax reduction dollar for dollar for those who participate. This is the primary incentive for higher efficiency homes and vehicles. People may purchase the new Energy-Star appliances, the GE energy efficient light bulbs, or any other product that will make their homes more efficient in order to receive tax breaks. Appliances are not the only products that may help save money for citizens. The “cash for caulkers” incentive is part of the energy tax credit that encourages home owners to caulk windows and doors and fill gaps so less air is lost. There are a number of home improvements that qualify for this tax credit. Other than the tax incentives, some individuals may just be interested in saving cash in the long run on bills and other expenses. There are several new building designs that minimize energy use. The design of the building, location of doors and windows, landscape position, and materials used all play a role in efficiency. New landscaping techniques are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners who want to save money and be more efficient.

Monetary incentives for environmental improvements are likely to be one of the most successful ways to implement environmental efficiency in today’s society. Monetary incentives will prove to be so successful because our nation is currently experiencing an economic downfall, and money is something that is universally important. Therefore, monetary incentives become a priority for governmental programs, big and small businesses alike, and even individuals in society. The use of monetary incentives could very well be a way to stimulate the economy and help people save money all while achieving greater environmental efficiency across the nation.

  1. Excellent article by the way I agree with most everything you said, though I think the cash for clunkers program is over rated in how green it is considered. Though, the cars that are being taken off generally are older and pollute more to the environment, the fact that they are being trashed when they can still run is awful for the environment. You should know that the amount of pollution created in a cars manufacturing makes the amount of pollution it emits for the rest of its life insignificant. With this in mind, the cash for clunkers is awful for the environment and not green at all, being that new cars are going to have to be made to replace them.
